With over 100 current scouts, dozens of active adult leaders,  and scores of Eagle scouts since our founding, Troop 174 is the home for your son in the Boy Scouts of America program in Central Indiana. Troop 174 scouts attend more than a dozen schools in the Indianapolis area. Weekend campouts are held monthly during autumn, winter, and spring seasons and each February scouts in the troop ski at Winter Park in Colorado.

Meetings
Our meetings are held on Monday evenings at 7 - 8:30 p.m. during the school year in the Activity Center (gym) of our sponsor Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church at 317 East 57th Street, Indianapolis, IN 46220.  Please see the calendar for the exact meeting dates. Scouts are expected to wear their full official Scout uniform to all meetings. New scouts are not required to purchase uniforms until the tenderfoot ceremony, which generally occurs in November. The troop will provide the neckerchiefs for all new scouts.

Registration and Dues
Scouts should be registered with the troop during the first three weeks of the scout year. Dues are $130 for each scout. Each scout must also provide a health history and a copy (front and back) of their health insurance card. If the scout fails to pay his dues or provide his health history he will not be able to participate in the hikes.  Arrangements can be made if payment of the dues presents a financial hardship.  Please contact Mr. Otte or Mr. Rocap, in confidence, to discuss your situation.

For returning scouts signing up for Troop 174, please complete the Personal Health and Medical Record - Class 1 only and bring to the meeting on Monday, August 24th.  We also need to have a copy (front and back) of your health insurance card.  Copies of this information must be on the bus at all hikes, and therefore must be submitted before the first hike, which is Sept. 25-27.  We also need to collect vehicle and insurance information from parents in order to fully comply with BSA requirements to transport scouts to/from hikes.  Click Here For Forms.

Registration should go smoothly.  We will have a sign up form for Scouts and Troop Committee Dads who were registered last year.  The form will be preprinted with information on file from last year.  You can quickly review the information, make any needed changes/corrections, and return it with registration fees at the sign up meeting.

Scout Uniform Policy
The official Scout uniform for Troop 174 is: Scout shirt tucked in to your pants. A merit badge sash with all of the merit badges received on the sash. School uniform blue or khaki pants are acceptable. Khaki shorts may be worn up to October 1st and after April 1st. All pants are to be worn with a dark-colored belt at the proper height. Shoes that cover the toes are required. The Troop 174 neckerchief and slide are required for all scouts who have achieved the rank of Tenderfoot.

Troop Committee/Adult Hike Fees
Fathers are encouraged to participate in the troop committee. This committee operates the troop throughout the year and meets the first Wednesday of each month. Please see the calendar for the location of each meeting. The dues for the troop committee are $30. Fathers are encouraged to attend the scout hikes and will be charged for the weekend for food.  Hike charges for adults are as follows:  If you prepay the entire year (6 hikes) the cost is $25/hike or $150 total and must be paid prior to Septemer 22, 2009.  There are no refunds if you miss a hike. If you don't prepay and wish to pay on Monday night before the hike the cost will be $30.00 and must be paid on the Monday prior to the hike.  There are no refunds if you miss the hike.  If you pay at the site of the hike the cost will be $40.00.  The charge is assessed if you show up on the hike other than to drop off your son on Friday or pick up your son on Sunday.  Arrangements can be made if payment of the fees presents a financial hardship.  Please contact Mr. Otte or Mr. Rocap, in confidence, to discuss your situation.

Attendance and Participation Policy
Active Participation by all Troop 174 Scouts requires attendance at Monday meetings and weekend outings, including participation with wreath sales (minimum sale is 40 wreaths). Attendance is required at a majority of the meetings and hikes (see scoutmaster or current Troop 174 handbook for further details) . Scouts working on their Eagle rank are especially reminded of this requirement.

Hike participation means arriving on Friday night and leaving on Sunday morning. Only the Scoutmaster can alter this requirement, all absences or late arrivals/early departures must be approved by the Scoutmaster before the event.

Eagle candidates should note that your actions at these activities serve as a positive example for the younger members of the troop. Service to the troop is an important part of active participation and achieving the rank of Eagle. Each Eagle candidate needs to demonstrate this skill and be prepared to review their service to the troop at the Eagle Scoutmaster conference. Failure to achieve adequate participation and service during the scout year will require that the Eagle candidate try again the next year.
