REGISTRATION – IMPORTANT!

Welcome! Everything you need to join the troop is outlined below. The registration process is very important to protect each troop member and the troop overall. Please follow the steps carefully.

Please submit all documents digitally, unless stated otherwise. You do not need to procure scanning hardware. If you have a mobile phone, you can scan documents using Google Drive, Dropbox and a myriad of other options. If you have questions about this, please reach out to the BSA 174 Registrar.

Any adult on a hike MUST have completed the Youth Protection and Safe Parish Training. All parents are welcome at our Monday meetings. If you are generous enough to volunteer to teach a merit badge class, you must take the Youth Protection and Safe Parish Training Sessions, but do not have to join the Troop Committee or Reserve.

Please reach out with any questions!

New Adult Registration

New Adult Registration:

One of the great strengths of Troop 174 is the unmatched depth of talent and experience of the adults within the troop.  Each adult is automatically part of the Troop Committee – the adults who meet to plan the operations of the troop and volunteer to take on formal or informal roles within the troop.  We encourage every parent to actively participate in the troop by doing one or more of the following:

  • Attend Monday night meetings, monthly hikes (campouts) and monthly Troop Committee meetings
  • Volunteer to help in troop formal or informal troop roles
  • Share your talents, experience and wisdom by teaching merit badge classes.

As a new scout parent, you have the opportunity to complete the largest set of paperwork.  On the bright side, your second year is much easier.

Step 1: Submit your basic registration information [LINK HERE]

Step 2:  Register with BSA by completing the BSA Adult Application [LINK HERE]:

Please complete the BSA Adult Application and the Background Check Authorization Form included in the link above and submit the complete document to the troop registrar along with all of the other required registration documents.

  1. Unit number: 0174
  2. Unit Type: Boy Scout Troop
  3. District: Monon
  4. Council: Crossroads of America Council.

You must also complete the Separate Questions on the right-hand column on the Application. The Troop will complete the registration fee and Boys Life fee information and submit it to the Council Office to complete the process.

Submission: Email a digital .pdf copy of your signed application and Background Check Authorization Form to registrar@bsa174.com

Step 3:  Complete BSA Annual Health and Medical Record [LINK HERE] DOWNLOAD it for a fillable pdf:

  1. Complete parts A and B of the Health form.  This must be submitted annually
  2. Attach a picture of the front and back of your current health insurance card

An updated Part A + B form is required every year and will be used for the ski trip, high adventure and summer camp registrations. We suggest completing the editable form and saving a copy on your computer so it can be reused for future registrations with minimal edits

Submission: Email a digital .pdf copy to registrar@bsa174.com.

Step 4:  Complete the Immaculate Heart of Mary ‘Safe Parishes’ online course [Link: https://www.archindysafeparish.org/]:

As a Troop with a Catholic Church/School affiliation, all adults complete the Safe Parish training provided by the Archdiocese of Indianapolis.

You will need to create a new login even if you have an existing login that was used for the old Safe and Sacred program.  When creating a new login, you will be prompted for a code, please use this code: Archindy2021. If prompted for an Organization Code, please enter 69683-LMK7.

Once you complete the training, you will not receive a completion certificate.  Instead, you will be marked as ‘in good standing’ with the Archdiocese of Indianapolis and you will remain in this status unless you show up on the quarterly police reports that are part of the system, in which case your record will be triggered as ‘Not in good standing’ and troop leadership will be notified. A randomized background check is part of this process.

Sorry, the troop registrar cannot help with the Archdiocese website questions or issues.  You will need to use the ‘Support’ menu item at the top of the page to contact the Archdiocese of Indianapolis.

Step 5: Complete BSA Youth Protection Training [LINK HERE]:

Though the certificate states it is good for two years, we require an annual certification because of the large troop size.  Safe Parish training DOES NOT satisfy this Youth Protection Training requirement.

You cannot be registered with the troop or participate on hikes, without providing Youth Protection Training completion proof.  Be aware it takes about 90 minutes.

If you are brand new to Scouts, you will need to create an account once you land on the website referenced in Step 5.  You’ll find the Youth Protection Training within the Menu\My Training menu in the top left of the website.   Early next year, you will get a membership card with an ID number that you can link to your account.

Submission: The BSA system should email you a .pdf of your completion certificate within 24 hours after completing the training.  Please forward that email to registrar@bsa174.com.

Step 6: Complete Troop 174 Vehicle Insurance Form [LINK HERE]

Step 7: Pay Troop 174 Annual Registration Fee:

$100 per Adult for Registration Fee plus $150 required Hike Food and Incidentals Fee

***If you are only registering for purpose of Ski Trip or Monday night merit badge counselor and will not be attending any hikes, $150 hike fee payment is not required.

  1. Payment may be made via check payable to BSA 174 or via Venmo to @Joseph-Todd-7. Please include scout name in check memo line or in Venmo comment section. Sorry, cash payment will not be accepted.
  2. Mail check to:

         5621 Washington Blvd

Step 3: Complete BSA Youth Protection Training [LINK HERE]:

***STEP 3 ONLY REQUIRED IF YOUR YPT CERTIFICATION IS EXPIRED OR SOON TO BE EXPIRED. TROOP REGISTRAR WILL ADVISE YOU IF YOU ARE DUE FOR RECERTIFICATION AT TIME OF NEW SCOUT YEAR REGISTRATION.

Troop leadership has determined that any existing member whose YPT certification expires at any point during the upcoming scouting year, as defined as September 1 – August 31, must recertify at time of registration. Safe Parish training does NOT satisfy this separate BSA Youth Protection Training requirement.

You cannot be registered with the troop or participate on hikes, without providing proof of Youth Protection Training completion.  This training takes about 90 minutes.
